North Cyprus is a small country brimming with wonders. There are places I can never get enough of and find myself returning to time and again. The Karpaz Peninsula is one of these places, home to two of my favorite spots: Karpaz Gate Marina and Golden Beach.
We embarked on a day trip to this slice of heaven on earth on June 11, 2024. One of our friends aptly dubbed it “A Day Out of Time,” a sentiment we all agreed with. I told her I’d steal the phrase and write about it. It was truly a dreamlike day.
Our first destination was Karpaz Gate Marina, a prominent marina located on the northeastern coast of Cyprus, specifically in the Karpaz Peninsula of Northern Cyprus. The marina boasts modern facilities and services, including berths, security, customs and immigration, a fuel station, technical services, shore power, water supply, WiFi, laundry services, restaurants and bars, a beach club, a fitness center, car rentals, shops, and water sports.
Renowned for its high-quality facilities, scenic location, and excellent customer service, Karpaz Gate Marina is a favored destination for yacht owners and sailors visiting Northern Cyprus. Enjoying some refreshments while soaking in the breathtaking scenery was truly worthwhile.
Our next destination was Golden Beach, one of the island’s most pristine and stunning beaches. Driving there is an adventure in itself. The beach stretches for about 5 kilometers, making it one of the longest beaches in Cyprus. It is known for its soft, golden-yellow sand, which gives the beach its name, and its crystal-clear turquoise waters, which are ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
Golden Beach is surrounded by natural dunes and unspoiled landscapes, offering a serene and picturesque setting. The area is a haven for wildlife, including the famous wild donkeys of the Karpaz Peninsula and various bird species. It is also a significant nesting site for endangered sea turtles, particularly the Loggerhead and Green turtles.
Golden Beach is largely undeveloped, maintaining its natural charm. There are minimal facilities, so visitors are advised to bring their own supplies. We knew of a facility overlooking the beach in a prime location and had lunch there with stunning views.
If one drives that far, swimming is a must. However, we left our swim for last as there was one more attraction right at the tip of the Karpaz Peninsula: Apostolos Andreas Monastery. This historic and significant religious site is dedicated to Saint Andrew (Apostle Andreas). The site has been a place of Christian pilgrimage for centuries. The original chapel was built during the Byzantine era, and the monastery has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years.
A priest (from the Greek side of the island), who seemed quite bored due to the lack of visitors, was present. When he saw us, he lit the candles, filled the church with the fragrant smoke of incense, and chanted a few sacred words in his native language. The experience was deeply touching.
Golden Beach is a gem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), offering visitors a chance to experience the untouched beauty and tranquility of the Mediterranean. Its pristine sands, clear waters, and natural surroundings make it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and those seeking a serene beach experience.
This whole day experience left our friends speechless, hence the term “A Day Out of Time” was used to express this magical day in one of my favorite places on earth.
